Practice
Gardner Stewart Architects (GSA) is an award winning architecture, masterplanning and urban design practice. We have successfully delivered benchmark projects across more than 4 decades, in all sectors including residential, mixed-use, commercial, retail, conservation, regeneration and leisure.
Our work commonly informs best practice case studies. We are experienced in balancing the competing issues of density, amenity, tenure integration, community involvement, heritage, & commercial viability. Enabling us to deliver designs which are socially, economically & environmentally sustainable. -
Community
Community is at the heart of all successful regeneration. We put people at the heart of every project. Harnessing positive energy and local knowledge can be a liberating process.
With a wealth of experience in consultation we bring an open mind and an acceptance of other peoples rights to hold a view. We encourage idea creation from every participant. For us, it does not matter where the idea began, it’s where it ends up that counts.
-
Our Ethos
GSA’s ethos of collaborative multi-disciplinary working first became recognised in the 1990s. We combine significant experience with a fresh desire for change. Our dedication to Place Making is underpinned by a new aspiration for Architecture of the highest quality.
Our aspiration for the future is bold and confident. The practice is moving forwards by creating successful Places with great Architecture. We relish the challenges ahead with an open mind, good humour and passion.
-
Collaboration
Our collaborations have taken us across four continents over three decades. Key to these successes is the ability to work collaboratively with other designers. We work in a flattened hierarchy that allows everyone to achieve their potential.
Cross fertilisation of ideas and processes between differing sectors and differing disciplines can help achieve delightful results. We are passionate about the detailing of buildings and about continuing the design ethos through all stages of the process. -
Place Making
We believe that great townscape is the creation of a memory, and therefore a defining moment in the lives of people. All building typologies need to acknowledge their obligation to the creation of a vibrant townscape.
A consistent ethos and harmonious relationship between building-scape and ground-scape is key to place-making. Three dimensional relationships should create singular, cohesive characters that resonate sense of place. -
Design
Architecture should be of social, cultural and physical relevance. It is an interpretive experience that gives contextual significance and humanism to built object. Great design is heard, felt and sensed as much as seen.
Prospect before Proposition - we see design as an iterative process that balances science with intuition. Large or small, every project needs the right concept. It needs to establish the rational prospects before committing to a proposal. -
Sustainability
True sustainability is social, cultural, physical and financial. Though environmental responsiveness is now embedded within the legislative process GSA continues to seek fresh ways of delivering radical solutions.
At Westway Beacons residents are given ‘guilt free’ cooling from the first Aquifer Thermal Energy Store in Britain. Mile End Park delivered the first (and only operational) Annual Passive Heat Storage buildings in the country and demonstrated our social and cultural awareness by the creation of an arts and leisure facility that is self sustaining financially and environmentally.
