Home of The Future

Study

The brief for this project is to offer an innovative solution for multi-generational home design. The aim is to accommodate not only the immediate family, but also perhaps an ageing parent, a boomerang child, or both.

Our solution is for a generous family home with a separate annexe at the end of the garden. The annexe could be used as a separate flat, or residential accommodation over garaging; or even sold off separately. This design offers the space for multiple generations to live together, but also to have privacy and degrees of independence.

The house itself is designed with a central service ‘spine’ containing the kitchen and bathrooms. The spaces around it are designed to be as flexible as possible – for living, eating, sleeping and relaxing. The spaces also allow for subdivision and partitioning – if required.

The issues that sustainable, flexible contemporary homes need to address:

  • Flexibility in use
  • Generously sized spaces and storage
  • Resilience to adverse and extreme weather
  • Supports mental and physical health and wellbeing of occupants
  • Sustainability – uses resources efficiently
